Goodwill Brochure Research on Text appropriate-ness in EL Brochures

I was just looking into companies who share a similar Mission Statement to Earthlink.
Also to reference how effective their brochure is (visually and verbally), and how Earthlink can achieve this.

The Road to Reintegration - Ensuring Successful Community Re-Entry for People Who Are Former Offenders

Goodwill Industries calls upon key stakeholders — including state and federal policymakers, judges, law enforcement officials, service providers (including local Goodwill agencies), educators, employers, and victims — to come together to create an environment that will hold people accountable and support individuals with criminal backgrounds who want to reintegrate into their communities and make positive contributions.

Street survey results

From 15 surveys taken on the street in Lower Hutt at midday....the main points I've found are:
2/3rds know of Earthlink (although 1 thought it was a computer company)

Most people go to any opshop/charity shop/tip shop - only once every few months.

Clothes is the main thing that people are after, followed by 'whatever takes my fancy' and then shoes and furniture.

People typically donate to any opshop monthly, twice yearly, or after a 'spring clean'.

1/3rd of people interviewed were aged 55-64. Then followed by 18-25 year olds.

Wayshowing tests

Exploring the application of vinyl stickers that have been cut into simple, recognisable icons to identify the different areas around Earthlink.

Using these icons that Rowena has made and cutting them using the vinyl cutter.

These work well as they are removable when stuck onto concrete. There can't be any residue left on the walls and the walls cannot be damaged when these stickers are removed as Earthlink rent their site.

Next step is to experiment with making these on a larger scale and sourcing vinyl in the colour palette we are working with.

Response from Rob

Hi Helena,

Thanks for your email and I am sorry I took so long to reply, just got caught up in a meeting. Doesn't time fly when you're having fun.

Q  What computer programs you have access to? (Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher, Indesign, Photoshop?)
A  MS word publisher and excel but don't use excel much and not that confident with it. I prefer GIMP as it's free - keeps the bosses happy! Power point from time to time.
I use calibre when I need something from an e-book. Audacity for sound bites and open office for those difficult files.

Q  Do you work on PC or Mac?
A   Strictly PC with windows but can use Ubuntu

Q  How often do you update your social media sites? and where do you find the information you post?
A  Update Facebook site every weekday. Did have a schedule ie Shop on Monday. Mindfulness on Tuesday, humour Wednesday, Earthlink Apparel on Thursday and
Recycling projects on a Friday. However Apparel has its own Facebook site now and didn't have many followers when I started (13) so after a while I decided to post
things that interested me as was getting very little viewers. I noticed that the odd things I posted got better engagement so stayed that way. I plan on moving back to a
schedule soon but haven't decided what that might be. I also think it might be best to have a separate Facebook site for the recycling shop.
I don't do Twitter at the moment mainly because content for that was going to be coming from my twitter account from ones that I was following and I got hacked,
account is in limbo at the moment. Twitter has just slipped by untended. There has been no promotion of our Facebook site and developed a plan some time ago but
have not had support so far. Time has it's restraints so anything you can come up with would be good.

I  looked at Google plus but found it not really that user friendly, I'm not sure if it has the impact that Facebook has had. Would like to post to Youtube but having
difficulty getting assistance from others in the organisation. Have had two videos planned since March but haven't had time to develop them further.

Linkedin - we have a site but no one knows the password or who set it up. I plan on following this up one day soon.
I have a Pinterest account but have not thought of using it for Earthlink.

I suggested that one of the managers might like to produce a Blog. I think if I wrote the Blog then it might be too political. I'm not sure that it would be the right
platform for Earthlink, it would all depend on content.

I have had a brief look at Blab.im and think it might have possibilities but need to examine it a bit more.

I think my priorities are to get Twitter up and running. Get the Earthlink web site looking better - it's pretty poor at the moment and needs to worked on pronto. I think a
few hours work would improve it vastly.

Q  And is it possible for you to send through a copy of your Facebook 'Insights'. This will give us a better understanding of who see's your posts and interact with the info you post on your page.
A  Yes and it is attached

Q  Last Question, What number do I call to get a hold of you if needed? When is the best time to contact you?
A  The best number to contact me on is my work number (04) 567 7111 between the hours of 8:30am to 4pm on Monday to Wednesday. For Thursday and Friday best before 10am. If you can't get me then you can try my cell phone 021 0511729 but I normally only carry it with me outside of work hours as I do a lot of physical work outside of Mon-Weds and am tired of breaking my cell phones

Q  What's stopping us from pushing forward with our social media platforms?
A   Buy in from senior management, they don't understand the importance of these platforms, this is fairly typical for the age group 55+. My generation seems very
distrustful of most social media platforms (including Twitter) and don't seem willing to engage. My boss has only just realised the relative cheapness of boosting on
Facebook in comparison to non-electronic media, so may be we will get a little movement on that front. Time, it takes me at least half an hour a day to get posts ready, it      would be useful to use Hootsuite and line up everything for the week. I don't use trending posts very much and probably should.
Money, everything costs, just about all of my work on Facebook is done outside of work hours (95%). We as an organisation we have to try and prioritise where our
money goes, there is not a lot available.

I am grateful for you looking at this as some input form you may encourage my management to at least look to using some of these sites more effectively. If it can be done cheaply you're on to a winner.

Regards
Robert Dodge

Meeting 21/09

From the feedback that the Earthlink representatives and our tutors gave us, we need to establish a clear direction for us to go.

We can't execute every solution/option to the highest standard, and it will be too much work for our team; therefore we need to select the two or three most important options which we can hopefully execute well/to a high standard.

This shows selection process from our propositions to Earthlink, down to what we believe are the most important.

We each were allowed two or three ticks each, and from there highlighted the few that we all agreed on.

In the end, it came down to the Templates, Video campaign and Wayshowing and Signage.

Now it's important to keep going, establish contact with the Hutt Council and the Organisation and work out how we can get permission or figure out the logistics of how we can get things done.
• Each of us have given tasks to complete by Wednesdays class.

Week 8 Chat with Jen

What needs clarification, questions for Shirley, some of what's been discussed this arvo

Things I feel we need to clarify:
  • ·      Who our target audience is. I think we need to put more thought into this. Shop-wise, undoubtedly, we will find some of this easier to define once we spend some more time out there. I think running a survey or two will help with who is coming in to use the shop.
  • ·      Because Earthlink is such a multi-legged beast, are we going to cover every part of the business? Demographic-wise, it’s difficult to direct towards donors AND shoppers and then trainees on top of all that. Should we just stick to the donors and the shoppers? But then, the shopper group is so diverse.
  • ·      At one point, we were talking about how we wanted to make things easier for them. Do we need to revisit this within our SPP?

Questions to ask Shirley/Maurice:
  • ·      What would Shirley like us to focus on?
  • ·      We need to meet up with their social media guy, (Rob?) and find out how he works. (I’ve looked at their Trademe pages and I believe they need help there too, but Maurice does this)
  • ·      What software do they have? Anything good for layout? If they don’t, does that mean we need to find a free program that they can use? (and then there’s the ensuing instructions on how to use it within our templates)
  • ·      Any video editing software?
  • ·      Does anyone there have a decent smart phone/camera for that purpose?
  • ·      And I’d like to know to what level NZQA does their Certificate course meets?

What anyone of us needs to research:
  • ·      To analyse their Facebook and Twitter content – their likes/followers, who they are following. Are they following other similar communities and organisations?
  • ·      Mock up of a before and after repurposing. (Helena and Rowena?)10 things to do with a jar… etc…
  • ·      What community newspapers are in the greater Hutt Valley. How much an ad would cost to put in. (this can be coupled with a self-written article)
  • ·      Look at the drive in/approach to Earthlink, coming in from both directions.
  • ·      Funding options.  Helena and I are keen on doing a stall, mainly for the fun of it. We will fill jars (from the shop) with all sorts, get photos (which could potentially go on the Facebook page) and talk with people about repurposing. So it’s also research. And any money we make, will be given to the group. Whether to publicise Earthlink or just keep it amongst ourselves, I don’t know. Should we have a flier to give out to those who are interested?
  • ·      Look up Pledgeme, Kickstarter, Boosted.
  • ·      Find good video editing phone apps.

  • Find free/shareware layout programs.
    • ·      Costings of signage. (Once we know what the signage is that we’d want)

    Feedback From Earthlink Presentation

    http://vocaroo.com/i/s0Lw7p3vNORm
Sound recording of what was said by Jen, Meg, Trish and Shirley.

Don't talk about what they are/reiterate.
Stop and have a look. Coffee to stop and break industrial area. Logo has greenery and leaf like forms plus shades of green similar to existing,
    They like the logo (sculptures)
Working at setting up Pop up shop in hutt valley CBD
Need visual map of how it benefits the company. Suggestions and what they're doing, crossover.

Our pamphlets relate to the elderly and the audience that prefers to take something home with them, and we would like to expand, rather than change the target audience.. Through social media and online resources we can attract younger audiences such as gen x and y??
Create a visual map and link what each relates to the benefit.
Make it clear what we aim to do, what's recyclable, how we will do it.. Meet the social media employee. Start initiating progress and really focus on what important. Communication between slides and talking. Show how templates would work.. Even though we didn't have time to mock up. Clarify what kickstarter and pledge me are so that others can understand how this will benefit the company.
The logo needs to be approachable, friendly and vibrant, but needs to showcase the sub-brands too. Change apparel to clothing
Say where the materials will come from and how the process will go.
Reusable resources, materials and processes which we will teach and transpire.
We were being realistic and didn't want to design something too far fetched for earthlink as we believe this does not say who they are.
Earthlink is humble and small an  we want to merge the honest recycle nature rather than a flashy show off logo or pamphlets.
We should have proposed "we would like to, we aim to, we may..." Our desire would be rather than we will, are, it will.
We also needed to suggest they have the vests and Fluro jackets already with the logo on it, we would like to add a saying to strike conversation with public.
    Don't make assumptions
How we will be future proofing with our templates and the training and teaching the staff.

Barrier: getting people to do talking for you. Ethics issue with personal video sharing (but a lot will volunteer and offer their story but some won't)
