Landfill Harmonic

I'm going to see this film at the film festival tomorrow. 11.15am at the Penthouse.

This is the film I was telling you about where the instruments are made from junk. In fact the whole community lives on this tip site.

  2. The film was fantastic. I think it would be difficult to compare the poverty of New Zealand to that of this community which lives off recycling the rubbish that the nearby city disposes of. But some lovely themes came up which are international.
The first is - opportunity. Being able to make an instrument from other people's rubbish created opportunities for the children of this poverty-wracked community. Earthlink's repurposed uniforms have given ex-industry sewers (as in those who sew..) opportunity as well.
The other theme is - alternative. The instruments in the orchestra are an alternative to a traditional violin, cello, clarinet. Earthlink as a whole is offering an alternative to mainstream tertiary education, mainstream employment and disposal of what frequently ends up in the landfill.
